Apart from all the necessary information you need for money transfers to Bangladesh, we have also gathered some additional facts that we bet you will find interesting.

Did you know that Bangladesh did not exist till 1971?

Today’s Bangladesh was part of the Mughal Empire until the arrival of the British Raj. When the Raj ended, the country was divided into two parts based on religion. The first the Hindu part of India and the Muslim rest parts of Bangladesh and Pakistan, both under the same government of Pakistan.

Did you know Bangladesh is an exceptionally highly populated country of almost 160 million peopleIt is the 8th largest in the world.

Dhaka is the 5th largest city in the world and the most densely inhabited. Based on the World Economic Forum data, there are 45.000 people per square kilometer.

Dhaka’s density is ten times that of Madrid and four times higher than Singapore’s, the 9th city in the same ranking.

The most surprising fact about Bangladesh is that it has the most extended female-led government.

You might be surprised, but Bangladesh has had a female Prime Minister, Sheikha Hasina, since 2009 and is in office for the third consecutive term.

Hasina, however, was not the first female president of Bangladesh. Khaleda Zia was president from 1991 to 1996 and was the second head of state in a Muslim country after Pakistan’s Benazir Bhutto.

Since 1971, Bangladesh has been led by female leaders for 25 years (and still is).

Another unexpected fact about Bangladesh is the Geographic Wealth of the country. Did you know that the longest beach in Asia is found in Bangladesh? Yet, don’t expect to see any bikinis there.

bangladesh 3

Cox’s Bazar is a beach in the Bay of Bengal, the longest in Asia, the third in the world, and the longest uninterrupted beach. It is 120km long.

It is not a typical Southeast Asian beach, with white powder sand and backpackers, but you will still find plenty of tourism, sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, and many hotels.

However, the country’s Muslim population is very conservative and frowns upon swimming clothing, so you should expect to go in the water fully clothed.

In Bangladesh, we will also find the World’s Largest River, Delta and Mangrove

The Bengal Delta is the largest river delta worldwide. It is fed by two large Himalayan rivers, the Ganges and the Brahmaputra, and a non-Himalayan river, the Meghna, fed by two other large rivers, the Padma and Jamuna.

The of Bengal is home to approximately 130 million people who depend on agriculture for survival.

The delta is also home to the world’s most extensive mangroves, the Sundarbans, a UNESCO World Heritage site covering 10,000 sq. km across Bangladesh and India, 60% falling within Bangladesh.

The interesting facts about Bangladesh continue and do not restrain in cultural topics.

In 2016, the Bangladesh Central Bank was the target of one of the biggest bank heists in recent history.

Hackers attempted to steal roughly US$1 billion in 35 smaller transactions through the SWIFT Network. There are still investigations to find the money.

You probably already know about Bangladesh that many clothing brands worldwide source their products from there, with an estimated 4,000 garment factories currently in operation.

While the industry has raised Bangladesh’s economy and helped empower women, much debate covers its practices and safety standards.

Indeed, in 2013, Rana Plaza crumpled, a complex lodging several garment factories near Dhaka. Over 1,000 factory workers were crushed to death, and another 2,500 workers were injured.

Bangladesh also fronts problems concerning the use of child labor, labor hours, underpayment, and lack of proper safety equipment around dangerous machines.

The above-mentioned explains why Bangladesh is still considered one of the poorest countries in the world, with 31.5% of a population of 161 million people living under the poverty line.

The wealth gap in Bangladesh is also staggering. Data compiled and published by the World Bank show that the most impoverished 20% of the population only controlled.
